The Angel Posting House & Livery is the last remaining coaching inn in Guildford and has records dating back to the 16th Century. Built on the site of Whitefriars Monastery in 1527, a ‘Posting House’, where coaches could rest or exchange their horses between London and the Naval port of Portsmouth, stands on the cobbled High Street of Guildford, one of England’s most historic towns.

The hotel is full of history and character. It instantly captures the imagination when you enter its enchanting lounge with its magnificent staircase and the lounge with original Jacobean fireplace, minstrel gallery and the large octagon clock that the government presented to The Angel in 1688 and is still in working order.

The Angel was receiving visitors 800 years ago. Our famous guests have included Lord Nelson, Charles Dickens, Lord Byron and Jane Austen.

In keeping with it’s individuality twenty of the twenty-one bedrooms are either named after famous people who have stayed here in the past or those who have or been part of families who have owned The Angel. The remaining bedroom is named after Guildford’s twin town in Germany.

Conveniently located in the heart of the town, the hotel makes an ideal base from which to visit the beautiful area of Guildford and the nearby attractions of Hampton Court and Windsor Castle.
